What is the Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship program?

The Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship is a program model that is totally unique to Wild Rose College. It is designed specifically to give you the practical skills necessary to begin to successfully pair herbs with people–helping you to apply your herbal education to the people who need your skills most.

The Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship builds on the knowledge you acquire in the Practical Herbalist and Master Herbalist Diploma programs (or equivalent education), allowing you to learn to apply your herbal knowledge with clients in a real clinical setting.

Why is it unique?

The Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship modules are intensives which pair Wild Rose College students (or students who can demonstrate equivalent herbal prerequisites) with practising Clinical Herbalists.

The Objective: real time, in-person learning settings fashioned after a traditional apprenticeship model, to acquire practical herbal skills the way they have been taught for generations.

The model of a traditional herb school is one where the students come to the teachers for an extended period of study. This can mean that it’s difficult for those in rural areas, or folks who aren’t able to attend a full-time 3 year program in Phytotherapy. Life commitments like raising a family, having to prioritize full-time work, or prohibitions like cost & potential of high student debt are all barriers to accessing quality herbal education.

Wild Rose College intends to change this. The Clinical Herbal Apprenticeship Program is unique in that it will enable students from all across Canada and North America who are studying herbal medicine to connect with an herbal mentor in order to acquire necessary practical clinical skills, resulting in qualified herbal practitioners to serve in all communities.

Why the Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship Program? What does being a Clinical Herbalist enable me to do?

Acquiring supervised clinical hours with an herbal mentor in an herbal clinic is the final and most important step of the herbal journey– where your education meets real world, hands-on herbal skills.

This is your chance to observe and participate in seeing clients, learn how to gather information (doing proper intakes), apply clinical diagnostic techniques (learning what the body has to tell you), and practice the process of formulating custom herbal protocols most suited to the person who has come to you for herbal guidance.

Whether your interest lies in completing the supervised clinical hours necessary for admittance into a professional herbal organization, building an herbal practice, or you just desire to have the confidence and skills to effectively formulate herbs and health protocols for your friends and family, the Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship Program is for you.

Clinical Hours: do I *really* need them if I never intend to open up an herbal practice or do consults with clients?

The barrier to continuation on with an herbal career–whether opening an herbal practice or utilizing your herbal herbal skills in many other non-clinical settings, is often the lack of opportunities to gain experience by working directly with other herbalists.

This is a sticking point in herbal education–simply because it’s extremely difficult to get connected with an herbal mentor to acquire the necessary practical clinical skills. Supervised clinical hours are also necessary for admittance into the professional herbal organization of your choice.

Wild Rose College is committed to filling this gap in herbal education in North America & connecting herbal students with experienced mentors in order to graduate qualified clinical herbalists who are ready to serve their communities.

How long is the program?

When you register for the Clinical Herbalist Apprenticeship program, you are essentially signing up for 40 hour blocks of supervised clinical hours which you will attend in person with your chosen Clinical Mentor & Supervisor.

Do I need to attend full time?

As the Clinical Herbalist Diploma are structured as in person intensives with your mentoring clinical herbal practitioner, a commitment to attend full time during your chosen block of hours is required.

All other on-line courses that you may be concurrently registered in can be completed online and at your own pace.

What are the requirements to begin a Wild Rose College Diploma program?
