Depression is a chronic emotional state, which a person may or may not admit to. It usually has the symptoms of fatigue, insomnia (sometimes hypersomnia), loss of appetite (sometimes ravenous appetite), physical inactivity (sometimes with alternating hyperactivity), headaches, backaches and a feeling of worthlessness, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and often thoughts of death and suicide. There can be many factors that cause depression such as a loss in the family, loss of a job, etc. Usually, time will help to overcome these types of depression, as they are a normal emotional response to life circumstances. Other depressions are influenced by biological factors such as nutritional deficiencies, food and/or airborne allergies, hypoglycemia, Candida, low thyroid function, heavy mineral toxicity, endometriosis or seasonal affective disorder. A third type of depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Often a depressed person does need counselling, but depression may be overcome by supplementation, without the use of antidepressant drugs. Sometimes, short term use of an antidepressant drug is needed to help get the person back on track (i.e., for the nutritional supplements to have time to function properly).

Recommended Action

The first and most important thing is to determine if there are any underlying problems such as Candida, allergies, etc. It is significant to have a whole food diet, reducing sugars, caffeine, alcohol and altered oils (e.g., rancid oil, margarine, etc.). Eat a significant amount of complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice, millet and buckwheat. Soybeans and soybean products (like tofu) are often beneficial as are raw fruits and vegetables. Regular exercise, without being too strenuous, is very helpful.
