Earaches and Ear Infections

These problems are extremely common, especially in young children. They will often indicate the presence of a problem by pulling or rubbing their ears if they are unable to speak. Earaches are often a symptom of other conditions such as head injuries, infection of the eyes, ears, nose, throat or glandular system. Several home remedies are available to relieve the pain. If the pain is caused by infection, the source should be determined. Injury, intrusion of foreign matter, or such things as swimming in contaminated water usually cause outer ear infections (from the eardrum outward). Infections which spread from the nose and throat through the eustachian tubes usually cause middle ear infections (the small cavity on the inside of the eardrum). This type often involves diminished hearing and a feeling of fullness in the ear along with pain and fever. It is inner ear infections which upset the body’s equilibrium centre causing dizziness, nausea, vomiting and partial or total loss of hearing. This is often the result of a spreading middle ear infection (otitis media) or meningitis.

Recommended Action

The most common cause of ear infection is an allergy to dairy and sometimes flour. Often by following a low mucus diet long-term relief can be found. Immediate relief from the pain of ear ache can be obtained by placing ice packs on the affected ear. Always treat both ears when dealing with infection; this will keep the infection from spreading from one ear to the other. To relieve pain and drain out infection, lightly bake an onion cut in half; take the warm onion and place half over each ear and hold in place overnight with a large wrapped bandage, or use a herbal fomentation. Middle and inner ear problems are helped by the insertion of a few drops of garlic oil in each ear. Herbs that fight infection should also be taken orally.

Single Herbs: Chamomile, Hops, Mullein (oil as drops or for fomentations over the ears); Oil of Garlic, Lobelia Extract (ear drops); Goldenseal (infection).

Combinations: Ear drops; three parts Mullein and one part Lobelia used as an external fomentation; B and B Tincture (3 drops) followed by Garlic oil (3 drops) in ear for six nights, on the seventh night rinse ear with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water using an ear syringe.

Nutritional Supplements: Vitamin A (20,000 IU daily), Vitamin C (2,000 mg daily), Calcium/Magnesium (two, twice daily).
