Muscle Strain or Soreness

Overexertion, or working muscles harder or longer than they are accustomed to, is the most common cause of muscle strain or soreness. Lactic acid is a by-product of the chemical release of energy, which builds up in the cells of the muscle causing soreness, fatigue and stiffness.

Recommended Action

Proper diet and adequate exercise will maintain muscle tone and prevent soreness in normal circumstances. Calcium and magnesium supplements help as they are essential to muscle function. Massage relaxes the muscle fibers and helps to move lactic acid out of the cells and is therefore excellent for soreness and stiffness. It is more effective if herbal liniments are used.

Single Herbs: Siberian Ginseng, Kava Kava (relaxing); Arnica Tincture, Cayenne Tincture (liniment for pain and swelling); Wormwood, Witch Hazel, Lobelia Extract (liniments); Alfalfa, Dandelion Root, Stinging Nettles (calcium and magnesium); Saffron (prevents excess buildup of lactic acid).

Nutritional Supplements: Beta-carotene (two 10,000 IU capsules, twice daily), B complex, Vitamin B15 (100 mg, twice daily), Dimethylglycine (DMG),Vitamin C (1000 mg – 3 times daily),Vitamin E (400 – 1000 IU, daily), Calcium/Magnesium (500/250 mg, twice daily), Multiminerals (two, twice daily), Malic acid.
