This condition occurs when the appendix, a short finger-like projection about three inches long attached to the cecum (lower end of the ascending colon), becomes inflamed. Natural health practitioners feel the function of the appendix is to aid in lubrication of the ascending colon. The fecal matter can therefore make the upward trip more easily after entering from the small intestine. The inflammation generally results from some obstruction, which is usually caused by constipation or faulty digestion. Pain, generally beginning near the navel, will soon spread to the lower right abdomen and be accompanied by loss of appetite, fever and possibly vomiting or diarrhea. Untreated inflammation may result in a ruptured appendix, causing the infection to spread into the abdominal cavity. This can be fatal. You should consult a physician or go to emergency when you suspect appendicitis.

Recommended Action

Take no solid food, drink plenty of liquid and orally take the same herbs as listed below for the enema. They work best in the form of a tea, mixed with fruit juices, or an alkaline (vegetable) broth. Olive oil is beneficial, either added to the enema and/or taken orally to assist in lubricating the colon and removing the obstruction. Demulcent herbs, especially those for glands, can be made into a healing poultice or fomentation to apply to the affected area repeatedly. It is very important in appendicitis to refrain from using any laxative as this may make the situation even more serious. This is especially true for children, as their tissue is more delicate and more easily ruptured.

Take one teaspoon of Fluid Extract of Wild Yam in a wineglass of water, one teaspoon Tincture Echinacea in a wineglass of water, and a teaspoon of olive oil taken alternately. Rub olive oil freely into the lower right abdomen.

Single Herbs: Chickweed, Elder flowers, Mullein (warm poultice with Lobelia and Ginger), Echinacea (homeopathic), Ginseng (homeopathic). Coffee enemas can be useful also.

Combinations: Goldenseal Plus Formula, Fenugreek and Goldenseal, Elder Berry – Larix.
