Bowel and Colon

Proper functioning of the bowel and colon is essential to good health. The term ‘bowel’ refers to both the large and small intestines, while ‘colon’ refers only to the lower bowel or large intestine. The primary function of the colon is to absorb water and electrolytes and solidify the fecal matter prior to elimination from the body. The bulk of the nutrients is absorbed by the small intestine. Only a small amount of nutrients are absorbed in the ascending and transverse sections of the colon. Fecal deposits can adhere to the walls of the intestine and solidify. They are a direct result of a rich diet and refined foods producing varying degrees of chronic constipation. Normal bowel movements become difficult to impossible as the hardened deposits interfere with absorption and immobilize peristaltic muscles.

Recommended Action

Drink copious amounts of clean water and be sure to include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds in the diet. Supplementing with additional vegetable fiber may be necessary in some cases. Alfalfa sprouts or tablets are excellent. LBT-3 is a good remedy to help rebuild immobilized peristaltic muscles. Highly refined starches and sugars should be eliminated entirely from the diet, while it is advisable to greatly reduce the intake of rich foods and mucus-forming foods, such as meat, eggs and dairy products. One of the most common herbs to use for colon problems is senna, however, long-term use can become habit-forming.
