The most common problem in this area is fibrocystic breast disease (FBD), or more accurately, fibrocystic breast change, which is quite frequent (upwards of 50%) in adult females. FBD may be hardly noticeable or produce severe pain. It is caused by benign lumps or fluid-filled cysts. These lumps usually give the most discomfort premenstrual or during menstruation. It was once thought that frequent FBD would increase the probability of breast cancer. This has proven to be incorrect. The cause usually has to do with the estrogen-progesterone ratio. The condition is so commonly found in normal breasts, it is believed to be a normal variant by the mainstream medical community. Other more serious problems include breast cancer, which is the most common form of cancer found in adult women and represents 30% of all new cancer cases (see under Cancer).
Breast cysts are often linked to excessive caffeine, iodine deficiency, low thyroid function and high estrogen. A sluggish liver or constipation can also be related to the cause. We immediately suggest the person stop consumption of all methylxanthines (such as caffeine found in coffee, tea, cola, chocolate). Even decaffeinated coffee should be eliminated. A low fat diet (especially reduced dairy and commercial red meats) should be implemented. Organically raised or wild game, and low fat yogurt, seems to be no problem for FBD patients. High fiber is also very important. Eat at least two servings of whole grains daily. Other substances to avoid are: large amounts of alcohol, cooking oils, rancid oils, fried food, tobacco and white flour. The most important supplements are the essential fatty acids (found in Evening Primrose oil, Borage or Currant oils). Fish or krill oils also seem quite good. A poultice of Poke Root applied to the breast has been found beneficial.

Nutritional Supplements: Iodine (0.25 mg daily), Beta-carotene (30,000 IU, twice daily), Vitamin C (3,000-7,000 mg, divided over the day), B complex (25-50 mg), Vitamin B6 (100-500 mg daily), Vitamin E (400-800 IU daily), Zinc (15-50 mg daily), Lipotropic factors (choline 550 – 1000 mg/day; methionine 500 – 1000 mg/day), Lactobacillus acidophilus.
