Colitis is an inflammation of the colon (large intestine). It may be simply a mucus condition or it may be ulcerative, with blood as well as mucus showing up in the stool. Diarrhea is common, sometimes alternating with constipation. Loss of weight, anaemia, and even toxemia are common complications. Other symptoms include hemorrhoids, abscesses, and prolapse of the colon. Depression and other emotional conditions can precipitate attacks of colitis.
