Herpes

These single to multiple, small fluid-filled blisters cause local burning or stinging pain. They can be found about the mouth (Herpes gingivostomatitis), lips (Herpes labialis), genitals (Herpes genitalis) and eyes (Herpes keratoconjuctivitis). After a person is initially infected, the virus will remain in a dormant state in the nervous system until another outbreak. Herpes will sometimes reoccur after minor infections, trauma, stress (emotional, dietary or environmental) and sun exposure. The incubation period is two to twelve days (averaging six to ten), with a typical infection lasting one to two weeks. It is hard to say how many people are affected with dormant herpes (estimates range from 20-100%), There are more than 70 viruses in the herpes family. The chance of getting herpes from intimate contact with a person carrying active herpes is estimated to be roughly 70%. It is interesting to note that some people never get the virus when in contact with a partner who has herpes. This suggests that the state of the immune system plays an important role in the contagion.

Recommended Action

The most important factor in dealing with herpes is that of immunity. It appears if a person’s immune system is strong enough when coming into contact with herpes, they will not contract it. If a person already has herpes laying dormant in the nervous system, good immunity and general health (physical and psychological) will lower the incidence of recurrence. Once a person has herpes, it appears to be unlikely that they will ever rid the body of the virus. It is quite possible to keep the herpes in a dormant state for many years though.
