The inability to fall asleep and/or to stay asleep long enough to obtain sufficient rest is called insomnia, and is often caused by emotional stress, nervous tension, physical aches and pains, meals eaten late at night, mental activity late at night, and stimulants such as are found in coffee, tea, and cola drinks. Hypoglycemia, Candida or adrenal exhaustion will often manifest as insomnia.

Recommended Action

Avoid all drugs and sleeping pills (consult a practitioner before coming off sleeping pills), as they not only create an unnatural dependence but also further disturb the dream pattern and can cause neurosis. Avoid late meals and mental activity and make an effort not to worry about problems, as this will only contribute to insomnia. Try taking a leisurely walk (especially barefoot, to discharge the static electricity built up in the body during the day), a warm bath or a meditation before bed. These measures can help to remove the insomnia and establish new patterns of restful sleep. Refer also to the sections on hypoglycemia or candida for treatment when this is the apparent prime cause.
