Acne (dealt with elsewhere), eczema and psoriasis are common skin problems. Eczema is characterized by blistered or crusted and scaling lesions which are almost always accompanied by severe itching. In this case secondary infection can be a problem, especially if the top layers of skin have been destroyed by scratching. Psoriasis (often a persistent and chronic problem which can last a lifetime) is characterized by pink or red patches covered with silvery scales and rarely produces pain or itching. A breakdown in the function of the skin as an eliminative organ is indicated in all skin disorders. The skin plays a major part in excreting wastes resulting from body processes and is therefore often referred to as the ‘third kidney’ or ‘third lung’. Poor bathing habits, using soaps that clog the pores, wearing synthetic materials which don’t ‘breathe’ and eating foods which produce excessive amounts of mucus and toxic wastes, all prevent proper functioning of the skin. When any area of the skin ceases to function properly, a greater burden is placed upon the remainder which still functions effectively, resulting in congestion and deterioration as toxic wastes attempt to escape through a limited area of skin surface.
A 12 Day D-Tox program, followed by a diet low in mucus along with herbs for the bowel and blood will cleanse the body of mucus and toxic waste. Skin irritation can be relieved by using chickweed in the form of a fomentation or ointment, while apple cider vinegar or yellow dock tea applied externally will relieve itching. Aloe vera gel may be taken internally or externally to relieve skin irritation. Black walnut extract or poultice, or Bone, Flesh and Cartilage fomentation, are also beneficial. We have also had success with Inflammation Ointment in some cases. The best herb for skin problems is oil of evening primrose.
