The thyroid (a butterfly-shaped gland located just below the Adam’s apple in front of the trachea or windpipe) regulates many important body processes. It combines iodine compounds in the blood with certain amino acids to secrete hormones. Basal metabolism (rate of chemical processes such as changing food into energy and building proteins), growth, thought processes, maintenance of body fluid balance, blood cholesterol levels and adequate functioning of other endocrine glands are some of the body processes which the thyroid affects. Sluggishness, absent-mindedness, nervousness, weight gain and chronic fatigue indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Increased metabolic rate, nervousness, restlessness, weight loss and a constant feeling of being too hot and sweating indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Goiter (an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland) is a symptom of either one of these conditions.
