This condition involves the build up of calcium deposits (calcification) or other mineral deposits on the inside of the artery walls, causing thickening and hardening (sclerosis) of the artery. If the deposits are fatty substances (atheromas), the condition is properly referred to as atherosclerosis. Of course some people have a mixture of the two. Both conditions have a similar effect on circulation. High blood pressure (hypertension) is commonly associated with arteriosclerosis and can cause this condition or, conversely, this condition can cause high blood pressure. The deposits, whether mineral or fatty substances, tend to form in the areas of the arteries that have been weakened by high blood pressure or strain. Narrowing of the arteries forces already high blood pressure even higher. As the arteries become less pliable and less penetrable, ischemia (cell starvation) results due to insufficient circulation to the cells. There is a danger of heart attack, apoplexy or stroke, especially in older people. These are caused when one of the coronary arteries becomes completely obstructed by accumulated deposits or by a blood clot either formed or snagged on the deposit.

Recommended Action

To strengthen the heart and clean out the artery walls implement an exercise program, starting slowly and gradually increasing to aerobic activity. The diet should be changed to eliminate all refined starches, white flour, sugar and saturated fats. Reducing the intake of saturated animal fats and animal proteins will help prevent atheromas, which contain high amounts of lipids (fat-related products such as cholesterol and triglycerides). There are many sources of bad fat in the modern diet. Foods to avoid include margarine, deep fried food, and rancid oils. Polyunsaturated oils are good to eat at room temperature, but should never be used in cooking. Eating high-fibre foods can often lower fat and cholesterol. Salt should also be eliminated. Lecithin, Vitamin C and B complex should be added to the diet, as they will assist in reducing lipid levels in the blood and in strengthening blood vessels.

Single Herbs: Reishi, Cayenne, Garlic, Ginger, Siberian Ginseng (anti-atherosclerotics and circulatory tonics); Alfalfa (especially the sprouts), Dandelion, Chlorella, Black Radish.
