Solidago spp.. S. Missouriensis
Positive qualities: Well-developed individuality, with an inner sense of Self, balanced with group and/or social consciousness.
Patterns of imbalance: Influenced by group or family ties easily, with an inability to be true to oneself, while being subject to peer pressure or social expectations.
“George doesn’t like the fact that he is so easily swayed by other’s opinions. He doesn’t understand why he can’t assert his own feelings when he is with his friends. George often suffers from bouts of mild depression, usually the result of his own lack of self worth. Growing up as the middle child he’s not sure he has ever had his own identity. His older brother was always the leader and of course his younger sister got all of the attention, as she was the cute, adorable child of the family.
George used to play the clown at family gatherings in an effort to get any one’s attention. As an adolescent he strived to become an individual. He wore radical clothes, spiked his hair and pierced his tongue and nose. And admittedly all his striving for individuality had only resulted in a shift of groups, making himself look different from his family of origin, by becoming just like his ‘new family’ of adolescent friends. Why did he allow himself to be pressured by others to be just like them? Why was he always hidden in the forest of people?
George longs to be a self-confident individual expressing his own values in the world. He wants to break away from constantly being influenced by those around him.”
Goldenrod flower essence is specific when an individual is not able to express their true Self because they are being overly influenced by the people around them. It is especially useful during adolescence when one is particularly susceptible to peer pressures from their ‘friends’ and associates. During this time they are changing dramatically, trying on various personas in an effort to learn who they really are.
As a person matures development happens on two axis. The horizontal axis is the influence of their environment including family, friends, associates and the physical environment itself. The vertical axis (also referred to as ‘Self’) develops from our Higher Self. People who benefit from Goldenrod flower essence cannot easily access their vertical axis due to strong influences from the horizontal axis. Influence from the horizontal axis starts out as our earliest sense of conscious self unfolds in the context of parents, sibling(s) and other people in one’s close environment. If these horizontal influences are overbearing, and the child is not allowed their own freedom of expression, the child will learn to rely on others for his/her sense of identity, rather than seeking identity through the vertical axis (their higher self).
In the process of maturation, a person should gradually gain a clear sense of individuality. The Goldenrod personality doesn’t seem to have completed this individualization process and is therefore subject to group influences and family dynamics. A strong sense of self worth requires a person to have a clear understanding of their own individuality.
A person who feels that all sense of self comes from their environment, will often do acts in order to attract more attention. An example of this can be seen in a child acting up, even being destructive during a social gathering in order to get attention. In these situations a display of antisocial or obnoxious behavior is an attempt to acquire a self-image by eliciting a response from others.
When a person becomes too dependent upon the opinions of others for a feeling of self worth, Goldenrod flower essence will aid them in focusing on their vertical axis, thus gaining more of their self-image from their own Higher Self. In this way a person gains greater inner strength and conviction, while aiding in balancing the two polarities of Self and Others.
Goldenrod’s scientific name Solidago comes from the Latin word solidus, which means: “whole” as in “to make one whole” or to bind or bring together. In this way Goldenrod flower essence connects you to your higher-self (makes one whole). A stronger connection to your higher-self creates enthusiasm, abundance and a more cooperative feeling.
When one starts using Goldenrod flower essence they will often begin to crave it within days or even hours as it imparts to them a whole new area of self expression and personal power. This sometimes has a rebound effect a week or two later, when person reflects on bad choices they felt they made in the past. These feelings are the reliving of emotions and will pass as those emotions are eliminated from their person. This process can also affect one’s dream sequences, resulting in the person feeling worn out and depressed when they awake. It can be helpful to take other appropriate flower essences with Goldenrod, such as the three Yarrow flower essences, Blackberry, Bleeding Heart, Buttercup, Fireweed, or Black currant.
Goldenrod flower essence is very good for children, adolescence and even pets. This is particularly true if they are going through a time when they are acting out with anti-social behavior.
