Why The World Needs Herbalism

“The beauty of herbalism lies not only in the knowledge it imparts but in the transformative journey it invites us to undertake—a journey of self-discovery, healing, and profound connection.” – David Hoffman

In a fast-paced world where much of our modern healthcare is dominated by pharmaceuticals and high-tech medical interventions, there exists a timeless and holistic system of healing that has evolved alongside us—herbalism. Herbalism is the ancient practice of utilizing the healing properties of plants to restore balance and promote overall well-being.

At Wild Rose College, we hold a steadfast belief that the world needs herbalism now, more than ever. Herbs offer us so many gifts, insights, and medicine in a truly holistic way. They can support our physical, mental and emotional health not only with their unique phytochemicals but also through the relationships that are developed as we work with herbs, nurturing our connection to the natural world. Herbalism beckons us to reawaken our innate connection to the land and encourages us to embrace an eco-conscious approach to healing that honors the Earth’s generosity.

“In the world of herbalism, we find a sanctuary of healing, where ancient knowledge and modern science intertwine to offer us a holistic path towards wellness.” – Aviva Romm

As we immerse ourselves in the study of herbs and their healing ways, we gain a profound sense of empowerment. Armed with these ancient teachings, we can make informed choices about our health and well-being, thus reclaiming sovereignty over our bodies and minds. As we walk the plant path, this knowledge and understanding begin to spill over into other areas of our life.

While herbalism as a personal practice is a fulfilling journey, as we practice, many of us experience such profound transformations, we feel called to share the gifts of herbalism with the greater community. There are many ways this can manifest, and for many, herbalism can easily go from personal interest and hobby to vocation. As our founder, Dr. Terry Willard likes to say “Our planet grows herbalists”.

Some find the enchantment of the wild world impossible to keep to themselves and may find joy in sharing this information through educational workshops or plant walks, or may dive even deeper into botanical studies through research projects.

Herbalism is both an art and a science and for those who crave hands-on creative practice, medicine-making could be where you find the most joy and inspiration. This could be starting your own line of herbal products, or formulating for other companies. As the practice of herbalism continues to grow, access to high-quality and sustainably sourced herbs has become the forefront of mind for many herbalists. Those with a knack for growing may find herbal cultivation becomes a business.

And for those who are looking for a high level of practice and are interested in working 1:1 with clients then the clinical path may be for you.
As
a clinical herbalist, you may find yourself running your own practice or joining an integrative team of health care practitioners supporting clients holistically.

Embarking on the plant path can be somewhat overwhelming at first, as the subject is vast, varied, and contains a diversity of perspectives. At Wild Rose, we recognize how important a holistic education is for a holistic subject and we are pleased to offer many learning opportunities with diverse contributions from 30+ experienced herbalists. Our offerings include diploma programs, single courses, clinical training opportunities, and our vibrant Wild Rose Herbal Village.

Our staff of herbalists and herbal enthusiasts have all been guided along their own herbal journey by many mentors & teachers. Here, we share some of the herbalists that have inspired us along the way:

Cherianne, Social Media and Marketing Coordinator:

“Alexis Burnett has been a transformative mentor in my herbal journey. His guidance and teachings have shown me the path of plant stewardship, and have helped me cultivate a deeper relationship with the Earth – realizing that our connection to the land enriches both our souls and our herbal practices. Alexis’s passion for wildlife tracking has inspired me to delve into this skill, enhancing my abilities as a forager and allowing me to harmonize with nature in ways I never thought possible. His influence has truly shaped me into a more mindful and connected herbalist.”

“Lucy Jones was one of the first amazing herbalists I connected with when I started exploring botanical medicine. She generously shares her extensive knowledge about plants and their medicinal uses. Not only that, but her warm and nurturing personality made me feel instantly connected. She has a teaching style that is not only hands-on and informative but experiential, making herbal medicine come alive.  Her passion for this work and her dedication to sharing her knowledge was (and still is!) truly inspiring.”

Megan, Wild Rose Village Coordinator

“In her books and classes, Abrah Arneson combines her unique perspectives, decades of clinical experience, and deep scientific understanding with her gift for storytelling. Delivered through the lens of story and mythology, these teachings find a place to rest in the mind and body that is deep and ancient. Her groundbreaking work on the medicines of the female reproductive system, much of it presented in her book The Vessel, is an incredible contribution to the reclamation of this ancient medicine that should be accessible to all.”
